All together, it is a temple of Lord Shiva who is known by the name ‘Igguthappa’ who is the cause for availability of food in the entire Coorg region. It is a religious temple for the people of Kodagu and the name of the Lord has always been remembered in every occasion starting from the birth of a child, festivals, marriages etc. The temple is located in Kakkabe near Virajpet at a distance of about 25 Kms from Madikeri. The temple is known to be in existence since 1153. However, the credit goes to King Linga Rajendra who actually built the temple in 1810. Further, it was Apparanda Bopu who beautified and renovated the temple and the descendants of Apparanda Family contributed to the renovation most. The famous ‘Huttari’ festival akin to Diwali is celebrated on the following day of the first paddy harvest in the fields belonging to Lord Igguthappa.
