Speciality

Nagarahole is one of the 98 National Parks of India and inherits its name from the river, Nagarahole (meaning river of cobra), which flows amidst the protected forest and is one of the main sources of water in forest. Named as the ‘Rajiv Gandhi National Park, covers an area of about 643 sq kms, is a home for the Tigers, Leopards, Asian Elephants, Indian Bisons, Deers (Axis, Sambar, Four Horned Antelope), Wild Boars, Porcupines, Peacocks etc. The major part of the park falls in Coorg district and a part of the park has a share of Mysore district as well. The park has rich forest cover majorly consisting of Teak and Rose wood. The Rajiv Gandhi National Park has been declared as the ‘Project Tiger’ tiger reserve and ‘Project Elephant’ elephant reserve. The Nagarahole reserve forest is part of Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve which is under consideration as ‘World Heritage Site’ by the UNESCO.

Best Time to Visit

The entry to the park is allowed between 6 a.m to 8 a.m and 3 p.m to 5 p.m. Special buses will be provided by the forest authorities for safari in the forest. Also, private vehicles are allowed if cleared by the forest authorities and when accompanied by authorised guides. Visitors are not permitted to get out of the vehicle.
